S was supposed to post about our last Friday adventure and well he has been a bit busy so I guess I will update everyone.
Pretend like it is last Friday. lol
Today we went to Souk Jara. Loosely translated ( ok I have no idea what the translation is) Open air market/ craft fair. We also went on a walking tour of rainbow street. Much to my disappointment there is not a rainbow in sight anywhere on this street. This area of town has lots of restaurants and some shops. It has the famous falafel stand that supposedly the King or previous King loves and will actually go to from time to time. Maybe this will be S's chance to get his picture with the King! Now we just have to stalk the falafel stand until we see the King. How could this possibly go wrong? On this tour we saw some amazing overlooks and of course we did not bring the camera. A friend of ours J was there and she took a picture of the three of us. So we will have to get a copy of it. We went to a great Soap House. They sell Dead Sea products and of course soaps. All produced here in Jordan and most at their shop. I had to get some! I ended up with a foot scrub loofa and foot cream. All this sandal wearing and sand/ dirt is ruining my feet! The soaps are a grapefruit and mint scent and are very nice to use. We also decided it was time to get a room defuser. We figure that Orange Blossom is a much better smell than wet paint. From the Soap House is a great view of the Citadel. I think if it is not too hot we may have to trek up there next weekend. It looks like ruins and a Mosque combined. I am very interested in figuring out what it is about ( yes I could google it but No I want the adventure) and we will take the camera with us. From the Soap House we continued around the corner and went into Wild Jordan where we could getting information about camping and hiking in the area and there is a cafe there. Then we had to climb this gigantic Jabal (Hill if my Arabic is improving) ok it wasn't that big of a jabal but there were a lot of steps and I had the 16 lb Little Lady in a front carrier! I really need to get some more exercise.* At the top of the hill is the Souk Jara. We went from stand to stand looking at tons of jewerly, pottery, paintings, and food. Another thing that is famous around here (it seems everything is famous to someone) is watermelon slushes. It basically was a frozen piece of watermelon blended with ice. I think. It was good and tasted of nothing but watermelon. Then we were handed a sample of lemon mint. S tried that one and said it was good. Also one stand had these awesome looking potatoes. They would take a potato and put it on this spiral slicer thing and it would carve the potato into a spiral. Next they take the potato and stick it on a kabob stick and then deep fry it. Once it was done they would sprinkle on whatever seasoning you wanted. It looked good. We did not try one but next time we go back it will be worth the 2 jd. Once we were done at the market we went with a group of people to a restaurant called Cantaloupe. Why? I have no idea. There was not a single cantaloupe on the menu anywhere. It has an amazing rooftop view. We looked out on the Citadel and then towards a really cool looking Mosque. It was striped brown and tan and somehow it managed to blend it with the surroundings. The dinner was amazing and the prices were reasonable for what we had. To get home we had to take a taxi which required us to walk a few blocks to where we could get one. During this walk I received strange and awful looks it was not until half way down the street that I realized Little Lady had pulled the front of my dress down and so everyone was getting a great view of my hot pink bra and girls! Of course this is in a country of modesty so yeah... I guess I deserved the looks. Little Lady however was drawing her own attention. People were just rubbing her head as I walked by (probably thinking don't grow up to be like your mom), and just reaching out to touch her. We had some strange teen girls come up and play with her and others ask to take a picture with her, we declined. Eventually we took a taxi back to our car and came home. Little Lady really enjoyed the taxi ride as she was able to just sit on my lap the entire time. There are no rules about car seats in this country so we see some really strange things which we will have to elaborate on at another time.
* History note: Amman was orginally known as the city of 7 hills it is now 19 hills and they are known and Jabal Amman or Jabal Abdoun or whatever, yes they all have names and if you are not in a hill you are in a Wadi (valley) and those are named too. So it does get confusing and we really will need to get a GPS because everyone seems to know which is which and will give directions using the jabals and wadis.
Shukran (thanks) for reading!
PS that is about the end of my Arabic so far if you want to know the rest I know it is kora= ball, Darraja= Bike, Balloona- balloon, Umniah (SP)= Wish. I know, really practical right? I learned this while watching some TV with Little Lady. LOL
